DCPS offers DC One After School programs, where students participate in an academic Power Hour, as well as arts and recreation activities.  After Care typically begins within the first week of school and runs from 3:30–6pm.  Fees are on a sliding scale based on free or reduced lunch status.  Please contact Ms. Thomasin Franken, Tyler’s after care coordinator, for any additional information about the program. Message from the Aftercare Coordinator:

Dear Parents,
We can’t believe it’s November already! As we’ve progressed into the school year, After Care has progressed, as well. Here are some updates on what is going on in After Care, and what we are looking forward to for the future!

• The Outdoor Classroom has added a great new space for our K, Pre-K, and Preschoolers to play in after school. While we will be limiting the use of the outdoor space as it gets colder and darker, please do send your child with labeled, weather-appropriate jackets, so that they may play safely outside if the weather allows.

• With the generous support of DC Public Schools and Mr. Dade, we will be getting new supplies in the next month or so. These supplies will range from pencils and notebooks, to math and language arts manipulatives, chart paper, and musical instruments. We will use these materials to strengthen the academic rigor of Power Hour, and the time our younger students spend in their classrooms when not in Art or Gym.  While we wait for our supplies to come, we are always accepting donations of paper, wipes, toys, manipulatives, etc. Please let me know if you have anything you’d like to contribute.

• Mr. Dade has also generously given our program new space! Look for the 1st and 2nd graders in room 129, and the 3rd-5th graders in room 306 during Power Hour.

• New Programming: Chess and basketball have started for the 4th & 5th graders with the support of Mr. Alston and Mr. Covington. Playworks is continuing after school with Coach David, who will be working with students of all ages! Georgetown Medical School will be meeting with K-5 six times in the next few months to discuss self-esteem and healthy living with our students.

• Upcoming Programming: We have had visits from 2 cooking programs, Operation Frontline and Common Threads, who are looking to start cooking programs at Tyler for our older students in January. We are also partnering with the Capitol Area Food Bank to create a 4-week cooking program for the Kindergarten, also starting in January.

• Finally, we are anticipating the beginning of our Yoga program, which will be funded by a grant that Catherine Jouet, Suzanne Wells, and Steve Sweeney have worked so hard to get and manage for Tyler.

• Volunteer Opportunities: Many thanks to Susan Lose, Katie Hodge, and Anya Sattler for including the After Care students in the planting of bulbs in the outdoor classroom! Our students enjoyed getting their hands dirty and working to beautify our school. If you or someone you know are interested in providing a one-time activity to After Care students of any age, we will be happy to accommodate! Please let me  know if there is anything you’d like to contribute.
