AFTERCARE at TYLER ELEMENTARY
More than 40 percent of the students at Tyler are enrolled in Aftercare, which is available 3:15 pm – 6 pm every school day.
There are currently two programs:
• Polite Piggy’s for early childhood students (3-5 year olds)
• DCPS Aftercare for all grade levels
POLITE PIGGY’S
Polite Piggy’s offers Aftercare at Tyler ES for PS-3, PK-4, and K students.
- There are currently 37 children enrolled in Polite Piggy’s Aftercare; the average daily attendance is 26.
- The cost is $85/week. There is a 25% sibling discount and tuition assistance is available.
- Polite Piggy’s is run by Vannessa Duckett-Thomas, a classroom teacher for 10 years, and Polite Piggy’s also provides aftercare at Maury Elementary School.
- Polite Piggy’s offers a day camp for 3 to 7 year olds during school breaks and professional development days at Lincoln Park United Methodist Church.
- Polite Piggy’s also provides Before Care at Tyler for $40/week.
- For Polite Piggy’s the staffing ratio is:
- PS3 – 8:1
- PK4 & K – 10:1, but they typically maintain 8:1 for all ages.

DCPS AFTERSCHOOL
The DCPS Afterschool program at Tyler ES covers all grade levels.
- The current enrollment of the DCPS Afterschool program is 131 students; the average daily attendance is 125.

- The Afterschool Coordinator for 2011-2012 is Ms. Shekha Arrington. Ms. Arrington is a 2008 graduate of Howard University, where she received a BS in Psychology. She has a Master’s of Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
- DCPS Afterschool combines academic instruction with engaging enrichment activities.
- For DCPS Afterschool, the maximum staffing ratio is:
- PS3 & PK4 – 1:15
- K-5 – 1:20
Academic Power Hour:
Academic Power Hour (APH) is meant to be a combination of 30 minutes of homework help and 30 minutes of a new lesson, which comes from a curriculum that promotes the Common Core standards. Students in K-5th grade will participate in APH everyday of afterschool. The lessons will be taught by their afterschool teachers, and the afters coordinator will collaborate with their teachers to make sure lessons are helpful for students.
Enrichment Activities:
DCPS aftercare has offered several enrichment activities for each grade level. For example:
- Gardening with Ms. Bloom for the pre-school and pre-kindergarteners: the students learned the process of gardening and plant growth, and picked herbs to make a cream cheese spread.
- Chef Demonstration during DC Farms to School Week: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders participated in a chef demonstration, learned about local produce, and made gazpacho.
- Basketball and Cheerleading for 4th and 5th grade students: Our basketball team and cheerleaders practice 2-3 days a week during Afterschool.
- Tennis Club for 2nd-4th grade
- “Common Threads” cooking program for 15-20 students from grades 2-5, starting in February 2012.
- “Murals for Kids by Kids” for the kindergarten class from Feb-2012 through May-2012.
- Math games for grades 3-5, in preparation for the end of year assessments.
