Welcome
Tyler grows students
Arts, language and technology
Global citizens.
Tyler is a public elementary school on Capitol Hill that offers an array of unique educational programs to meet the needs of our diverse community. The Tyler Elementary community aims to create global learners through high expectations in academics and citizenship. We will achieve this through arts integration, world languages, and technology for all students.
Tyler Elementary offers a quality education infused with the study of arts, language, and culture. Some Tyler students enjoy Spanish Immersion, while others flourish in Special Education that caters to students with autism. All students benefit from Arts Integration.
Family and community engagement is a hallmark of the Tyler experience: with partners like Turning the Page and Akin Gump, Tyler staff, students, and families come together for activities as varied as Math Night and The Harvest Festival.
In July 2009, Tyler became one of 13 DC Public Schools to receive funding for an Arts Integration model known as the “Catalyst Project.” In an Arts Integration themed school, the arts—movement, dance, visual arts, and music—are woven into instruction in all subjects, all classrooms. Among the goals of Arts Integration are increased student engagement, higher student achievement, and building a sense of community in the classroom as students encourage each other to take risks in artistic expression and communication.
Any Tyler student who qualifies as a student with an Individualized Eduation Plan (I.E.P.) benefits from a full range of inclusion opportunities. Students with I.E.P.s are challenged to apply their skills in and out of the classroom and to develop their full potential to succeed in an academic environment, in daily life at home, and in the community.
Spanish Immersion at Tyler Elementary School began in the fall of 2005 with our very first three-year-old class. In the 2012-2013 school year, all Pre-School through 5th grade students will benefit from Spanish language opportunities. Our program is a welcoming and caring environment that fosters a love of different languages and cultures. Immersion students develop flexibility in thinking through problem solving, conceptualizing, and reasoning in two languages. Students at all levels will: Become bilingual and bi-literate; Reach high academic standards; and Gain cultural awareness.
Tyler Elementary strives to be a diverse learning community built on shared responsibility, personal and community safety and respect. Together we will ensure that every child experiences the joys of learning, self-discovery, success and acceptance enabling each Tyler student to reach their highest potential.
